The play, Coquette, which she co-wrote with George Abbott, was the toast of Broadway with Helen Hayes as its star. It was during this time that Elizabeth Lawrence and her family lived across the street from Anne's mother on Hillsborough Street. Elizabeth was a recent graduate of Barnard College who would go on to become the first female graduate in the landscape design program at North Carolina State University. Elizabeth and Anne struck up a friendship. Through the correspondence between these two accomplished women, one glimpses what life in a Southern town was like for upper class women during the 1930s and 40s. The women discuss books, plays, travels, ideas, and of course, the garden.
