The villagers are hoping Spring will come soon, because they have been suffering through a very cold winter, the river is too frozen to provide fish, and the gathering of firewood is dangerous due to the Monster living in the woods. Li Chou lives with his Mother and Grandfather, and when Grandfather is injured, Li Chou must gather the firewood for his family. Li Chou enters the forest and meets the Monster, who turns out to be very different from what the villagers have believed, and together they find solutions to everyone's problems. Li Chou shows us the power of friendship, not only to accept others as they are no matter how different they may be, but also to help them to use their talents to the betterment of eveyone.
