Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on French Novelists All the essays in this volume, with one exception, originally appeared in the Fortnightly Review, to the editors and publishers of which periodical I owe my best thanks for permission to reprint them. The one exception is the essay on Lesage, which appeared as the introduction to a reprint of the translation (known as Smollett's) of Gil Bias, published some ten years ago by Mr. Nimmo, whose license to reproduce I have, also thankfully, to acknowledge. Of the others, the opening essay, which has been very considerably remodelled, appeared in February 1888, that on Anthony Hamilton in October 1890, A Study of Sensibility in September 1882.
