Book excerpt: The book focused on the procedure of performance evaluation of staff in Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, It assessed the appraisal method and instruments of performance evaluation employed by the institute and the effect on the staff performance and work-related habits. the book revealed that the procedure of evaluating the performance of staff was defective as it gave room for a lot of inadequacies and eye service among staff. it also revealed that performance evaluation was mainly employed to determine staff promotion while other uses of performance evaluation were neglected. Moreover, it revealed that even though performance evaluation is conducted annually in the institute not all staff were assessed annually. The book concluded that the aspect of conducting appraisal of staff performance every year should not be handled with levity and that performance appraisal should be a continues exercise rather than a "post Morten" exercise which is currently the situation.
