PATENT PORTFOLIOS, which is the third of three books that make up "The Patent Quality Series", includes four main sections: First, a definition of "excellent patent portfolio", with an explanation of ten principles related to such a portfolio and a close review of the patent portfolios of four high-tech companies in the areas of Internet firewalls, electronic signatures, cameras, and cellular telephones, respectively. Second, an explanation of how to obtain an excellent patent portfolio. Key concepts of patent portfolios are presented, particularly the concept of Technology Inflection Points. Two critical issues of portfolio management are discussed - (1) Build versus Buy, and (2) Quality versus Quantity. A model is presented by which a company may manage an in-house patenting program. Third, various methods of budgeting for patents are presented, including bottom-up budgeting, top-down budgeting, competitive budgeting, and hybrid budgeting. There is a discussion also of the conflict between targeted results and targeted costs. Fourth, a summary in Question & Answer format reviewing the main concepts of an excellent patent portfolio, managing portfolios, budgeting for patent investment, and special topics such as Technology Inflection Points, patent aggregation, patent pools, and methods of patent evaluation. The book ends with an extensive Glossary of terms related to patent portfolios.This book is intended for anyone who wants to build or manage an excellent patent portfolio. It is intended also for anyone evaluating a patent portfolio with intent to take actions related to all or part of the portfolio - buy, sell, license-in, license-out, develop further, or design around the portfolio.
