The majority of these proverbs are presented here for the firts time in an English translation. Each proverb is labelled with the name of the country of its origin; some proverbs are so widely known that they can be categorised as, e.g., North African. Others are given with the name of the ethnic group or the language where each was recorded. In this way it is hoped the greatest possible variety is achieved and the readers will have a fair impression of the richness of African oral traditions.
